(Mirror Daily, United States) – If you’re a huge fan of the series, you might be disappointed to know that Google Cardboard Star Wars edition came and went very quickly after a flurry of orders. There were probably thousands of Google’s VR viewer that are now in the hands of hardcore Star Wars fans. And it took only around 3 days for all of them to disappear.
On December 11th, Google offered for a limited time only, free units of their famed device themed with Star Wars characters. This was placed precisely a week before the premiere of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, which will launch on December 18th. The versions were offered for fans to choose from several variations in theme with the popular franchise.
Thus, those who got there quick enough were able to order a Google Cardboard ‘dressed up’ as R2-D2, BB-8, KyloRen, or a First Order Stormtrooper. The estimated price was between $15 to $25, but the beautiful catch was that Google sent all of them out for free. In fact, the tech giant also paid for the shipping, so there was absolutely no charge. It’s probably one of the many reasons why they flew off the shelves so fast.
Users had to head over to the Google Store, pick their preferred character, add it to their cart, and then proceed to the checkout where they would finalize their order. With no money snatched from their account, they are now among the lucky few with the limited-editions of a Star Wars Google Cardboard.
Google has promised that their product will arrive before the official launch of the seventh installment of the sci-fi series.
Admittedly though, it’s a simple variation from the usual design of the product. It holds no special abilities, but it’s a beautiful novelty item that collectors might not mind having. Star Wars is certainly a franchise that has seen to almost crazy investments on the part of their avid fans.
However, now all those potential collectibles are gone. In a matter of days, they were declared as ‘sold out’, even though Google did not provide an actual number of the offered products. It was suggested that there might’ve been thousands of the themed variations. However, it was also a clever marketing move on Google’s part.
‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ is easily the most anticipated movie of 2015. The promotion started blooming this summer, and it’s now reaching peak with the movie coming out in just a matter of days. Theaters have sold out all their tickets nearly two months before the premiere. The movie already shattered a few records without even releasing.
At this point, it’s probably safe to say that stamping ‘Star Wars’ on anything could turn it into a well-sold product.
