Coffee consumption can reduce the risk of death in diabetic women
(Mirror Daily, United States) – Coffee might be the best drink for women who suffer from diabetes, as it might prolong their life. A recent study developed by a team of researchers from the University of Porto, Portugal suggests that diabetic women who consume caffeine have more chances of a longer life than those who don’t.
The study has been presented at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, but it hasn’t appeared in a scientific journal yet. Researchers found a connection between coffee consumption and diabetic women. However, there was no such connection present when it came to diabetic men.
Coffee was associated with a reduced death risk
For the study, researchers analyzed death rates and caffeine consumption in 3,000 people suffering from diabetes. These people had to report the caffeine they take from consuming coffee, tea, or soda, and were followed for a period of 11 years. Until the study was over, 618 people died.
Those women who consumed 100 mg of caffeine or less every day, or the equivalent of a cup of coffee, had 51 percent lower chances of death. If they drank up to 200 mg of caffeine, the rates went up to 57 percent. Even higher quantities of coffee proved good for health, as they even reported a risk of death reduced by 66 percent.
Caffeine has a protective effect on diabetic women
Coffee was good for reducing the risk of death from any cause, but it was more prominent when it came to cardiovascular diseases. Also, if they took caffeine more from coffee than from tea, the risk of developing cancer was also significantly lower.
However, the study was only observational. Therefore, it’s improper to tell caffeine reduces the risk of death, as it rather exerts a protective effect on diabetic women. What is clear is the fact that the more coffee these women consumed, the more protected they were from any natural cause of death.
