The Rose-Red City of Petra
(Mirror Daily, United States) – An excellent achievement has been made, as Google Street View is welcomed in historical Jordan sites that would provide viewers with beautiful views of 30 different locations. It’s an exceptional feat and described as one of the biggest projects for Google Street View in the Arab world.
With the aid, acceptance, and warm welcoming of Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan, Google has managed to capture the magnificent sights of historical Jordan. It’s not a location on most people’s list of places to visit, but it’s a true haven for history buffs. It holds breathtaking sights that are now available for Google Street View users.
Whether it’s curiosity or a way to plan ahead of an actual trip, the tech giant along with Queen Rania have made the “beautiful kingdom in the heart of the Middle East” available for anyone with an internet connection. With just a few clicks and then simple maneuvering around, users can use the Google Street View to get a 360 degrees view of ancient streets and ruins.
According to Google, Jordan is “one of the most spectacular places” they have ever visited, and it’s in their hopes that they managed to capture the “beauty and deep heritage of the country”. The tech giant now offers views ranging from the Dead Sea to the ancient city of Jerash. Outside of Italy, it’s home of the best preserved samples of Roman architecture. It’s also the second most visited site in the country.
The first is, of course, the heart of Jordan and its “crowning glory”, the Rose-Red City of Petra. It’s one of the seven wonders of the world, and an impressive sight that is often found only in fantasy movies. The city was carved directly into the white and pink stone, built into the cliffs and mountain. It’s an historical site of monumental proportions.
It has also featured in ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’, featuring Harrison Ford and Sean Connery, both of which arrived on the site to film. So, perhaps it would be more favorable for some to don an Indiana Jones hat while visiting the ancient Petra.
The Google Street View images were captured using Trekker. It’s essentially a Street View backpack, which means that footage was done on foot. This will better explore the paths around Jordian, including narrow ways to provide access to numerous tourists sites.
According to Her Majesty Queen Rania herself, this technology “provides a lens in the past”, a better understanding of their culture, and hopefully a glimpse into why these treasures need to be preserved for all future generations.
