GOP Leaders Assure Media There Will Be No Government Shutdown • Mirror Daily

(Mirror Daily, United States) – GOP leaders assured the press that the U.S. House will 100% pass a bill that will prevent a partial government shutdown over the weekend.

House Speaker Paul Ryan told reporters Wednesday that there would be legislation that will keep all federal agencies operational through December 22. The government runs out of cash on Friday if Congress fails to approve a fresh round of funding.

The heads of the House Freedom Caucus also assured reporters that the bill would pass, despite the group’s previous strong opposition. Rep. Mark Meadows claims he overheard House Majority Whip Steve Scalise that there were enough votes to pass the temporary spending bill.

Meadows confirmed that the Freedom Caucus will back the measure. and gave a motive: they don’t want a distraction from the real issue – the GOP’s $1.5-trillion proposed tax reform.

The proposed tax plan which will benefit high-earners and businesses is President Trump’s top priority on his agenda. The Republican Party hopes the tax plan will mark a first major victory next year.

Conservatives Poised to Oppose Excessive Spending

After Trump negotiated permanent measures to keep the government afloat, Meadows told reporters that the conservatives would not support any measure that will lead to excessive federal spending.

I want to avoid a headline that says President Trump’s administration just passes the highest spending levels in U.S. history,

the North Carolina Republican told the press.

He added that there would be “zero support” for any excess spending regardless of the promoter of such measures. Meadows also claims that Ryan told him that he’d do whatever necessary to pass a full-year budget for the Defense Department. Ryan also wants to delay any fights in Congress on domestic spending.

It wasn’t immediately clear how Ryan can achieve that since the Senate needs at least eight Democrats to pass any legislation regarding the budget.
