How To Stay Fit After A Thanksgiving Feast

(Mirror Daily, United States) – The Calorie Control Council (CCC) has managed to scare people, but there are ways on how to stay fit after a Thanksgiving feast and make sure you won’t overindulge. The CCC brought up a worrying report, stating that the average American will consume around 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving Day, in addition to the 229g of fat.

That’s double the recommended amount of daily calories, but it’s not only the feast that adds some extra packing around your belly. It’s the days and weeks following, with leftovers still making way into your meals. There are ways to avoid it though, and make sure you won’t feel the repercussions of the extra calorie intake.

A journalist from the New York Times crunched the numbers, and estimated that the average American will eat only around 2,500 calories for the occasion. However, that’s still fairly too much, considering it’s just one meal.

Dr. Sara Wilson, who is the senior director of Clinical Nutrition in New York offered a few tips on how to keep yourself fit during the upcoming holiday.

For one, sleep is the most important tool. Numerous studies have shown that getting a good 7-8 hours of sleep per night can aid against heart problems, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. That is no different the night before Thanksgiving. By getting a good amount of sleep, it will reduce changes of overeating, snacking, and cravings.

Another advice is to not arrive to dinner too hungry. This is true for shopping, and true for Thanksgiving Day. Everyone is encouraged to eat a little lighter during the day, focusing on filling proteins and healthy fats. And, as always, make sure you stay hydrated, but don’t go overboard. It would be a shame not to enjoy the cooked and delicious dinner later in the day.

An easy way to make sure you don’t indulge in too many calories, the advice was to use the 50/25/25 system. That means 50% of your plate to contain vegetables, 25% protein, and 25% for grains. This way, it will assure the intake of healthier food, especially if certain candied or butter-laced varieties are avoided.

Keeping yourself at just one glass of wine at dinner is also recommended. The extra sugary liquids or alcoholic beverages will just add more to the total caloric amount. Opting for water or seltzer during the day might help.

And, the most important advice: focus on the gathering. While it’s true that Thanksgiving is marked by oodles amount of food on the table, it’s also a family holiday. Leave the meal on second place, and instead focus on enjoying the company of friends or relative. While it might be tempting to overeat instead of dealing with the more stressful subjects that would come up, there’s no reason to pay later by going up a size.

However, also keep in mind that Thanksgiving is just one day of the year, and then you’ll head back to your preferred food pallet. You have time to shed that extra pound until New Year’s. The best that anyone can remember is to enjoy the holidays, spend time with their families, and be thankful.
