Bloodshot eyes, an iPhone with an almost depleted battery and a cup of coffee is the normal sight on almost all of the streets in the present-day United States. People are popping melatonin pills and doing espresso shots in order to stay awake and find the resources to get through the day.
And this doesn’t happen only after a heavy night, it happens on a regular basis. The CDC already declared that the lack of sleep is one of the major problems in the United States. Americans are sleep deprived and it doesn’t only cause dark patches around the eyes. Sleep deprivation can lead to more serious health problems like cardiovascular disorders, diabetes and even stroke.
In order to get this results, the CDC did a telephone survey on 444,306 US citizens. Out of the total, 65 percent declared that they are getting more than seven hours of sleep per night, while 35 percent admitted that their sleep pattern is chaotic and often sleep for less than the recommended amount of seven hours.
There are several factors that lead to sleep deprivation. Unemployment, or a problem that is causing the individual to be unable to work are among the most common. The findings are consistent to the conclusions of previous studies that showed a link between unemployment, depression, and sleep deprivation.
People with a higher education are more likely to get a good night’s rest than people who stuck to the basic high-school diploma. Researchers believe that this is caused by either the fact that people who finished college are more likely to be aware of the fact that the body needs a certain amount of sleep in order to function properly, or because they tend to have better paying jobs.
Marriage is, apparently, good for your sleep life. This may be because once you get married you start to better prioritize your needs. So a night out clubbing sounds far less appealing than a cozy night inside and a fresh start in the morning.
Also, the researchers found that some ethnic and racial groups are more prone to sleep deprivation than others. In this category the researchers included multiracial and black people.
Americans are sleep deprived and this could have a serious impact on their health. A lack of Zs can cause diabetes, obesity, stroke, cardiovascular disorders, high blood pressure and even mental distress.
So next time you decide to check your social media “for five minutes” before going to bed, don’t. Just turn in for the day because most Americans are sleep deprived.
