Monarch butterfly, best known for its flight from Canada to Mexico has become an endangered species. Monarch Butterfly population has plummeted down to the extent that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service believe that there are enough reasons to put the species under the Endangered Species Act.
The agency has started a status review which is the first step towards bringing the Monarch butterfly under the protective umbrella of the nation’s environmental laws.
Tierra Curry, a senior scientist at the Arizona-based, one of three groups that petitioned for the review said, “Everyone has been aware of how small the population is. A couple of bad storms could really send the population into an irreversible decline.”
The listing of the butterfly will surely create problems for farmers as well as St. Louis-based Company Monsanto and its product Roundup herbicide and genetically engineered crops has been cited as one of the causes of the fall in population.
