Unplanned pregnancies could lead to an unprepared mother that doesn’t take care of herself.
(Mirror Daily, United States) – Ever since women have started using IUDs or LARCs, the number of unplanned pregnancies significantly dropped, thus also reducing the number of abortions. According to the latest study, from 2008 to 2011 the number of unplanned pregnancies fell by 18 percent. This means that 45 in 1,000 pregnancies pregnant women in 2011 did not plan their babies.
Reversible long-acting contraceptives and intrauterine devices use spiked in 2008, about the same time in which the number of unplanned pregnancies significantly dropped.
The CDC has observed that over the past years the number of both abortions and general pregnancies declined. There have been various studies on the subject, including one that revealed that the average birthing age is now that of 26.
The possible reason for the dropping numbers is the use of LARC and IUD devices. Since 2007, the number of women that use such measures has tripled, meaning that there are a lot more women out there who take adequate protection measures.
Furthermore, when it comes to women in a committed relationship, the LARC or IUD is much more advantageous. They don’t have to use rely on a daily pill that could counter react with even a grapefruit or a condom.
Still, doctors are urging women who are not in a committed relationship but who wish to use reversible long-active contraception or intrauterine devices also to wear a condom so that they can protect themselves from sexually transmitted diseases.
As to the fact that the number of unplanned pregnancies significantly dropped, physicians are pleased. The director of the family planning department at the Hospital of Mount Sinai, Adam Jacobson, declared that new contraception methods are offering the women a meaningful choice. They can finish their education and provide a better income for their planned children.
The Guttmacher Institute also declared that unplanned pregnancies do have an impact on public health. It seems that unintended pregnancies are linked to adverse infant and maternal health outcomes. For examples the mother does not benefit from complete prenatal care, she has bigger chances of giving birth prematurely and the child will be mentally and physically affected to one degree or another.
The Institute also stated that improved contraception measures lead to fewer cases of maternal deaths. This is mainly because teenagers and young mothers are more predisposed to severe birth complications and even death.
The number of unplanned pregnancies significantly dropped, and this is a major step forward towards happier mothers and children.
