Based on the recent reports published by the company’s officials, Huawei debuts new P8 Lite handset in America starting this weekend. The new smartphone will be available on Amazon, BH, Electronics and Fry’s and analysts expect it to become a hit due to its good quality-price report.

The Chinese producer has been trying to come up with a new product that could compete against existing smart gadgets in America for quite some time now. Its objective has finally been accomplished now that the Huawei debuts new P8 Lite handset in American stores.

The official price of the smartphone has been set at $249.99, but costs may vary depending on the region where the device is being commercialized. At a first look, the product specifications seem to make up for the requested money, tech savvies have agreed.

Many financial advantages have been prepared for those customers who will be among the first to purchase the new handset. Huawei offers a $50 discount to users who purchase the new P8 Lite within 72 hours. As the name of the device might suggest it, the design of the new Huawei P8 Lite is incredibly slim and thin, even though it has been featured with a 5-inch, 720p Corning Gorilla Glass 3 screen. NASA will use backups to access the data recorded by Mars’ orbiters.

The administration will develop new strategies in the following period, given that NASA’s communication with Mars will be hindered by this month’s solar conjunction. The announcement was made on Thursday after scientists enlisted some of the techniques they plan on using to continue receiving data from the Red Planet.

Starting on June 7 and all through the month of June, the Earth and the Red Planet will enter a solar conjunction. The event will render space communication impossible; therefore, NASA might not be able to receive data from Mars.

There are currently four major orbiters that will interrupt their communication services during the Mars solar conjunction. These are Odyssey, MRO, Curiosity and Opportunity. The robots may account as downright veterans as they have witnessed many solar conjunctions since their landing on Mars.

Odyssey has been through 7 solar conjunctions since its arrival on Mars, in 2001. Opportunity and MRO have experienced this event six or five times before, since they first started investigating Mars’ territory in 2004 and 2005, respectively.

Experts are not worried that data might be lost during the upcoming event. They take great confidence in the backup services they have used so far and they expect to get access to the new images as soon as Mars is no longer in the way of the Sun.

Other space agencies will most likely confront themselves with the same communication problems. Although the European Space Agency and the Indian Space Research Organization did not make any official declarations, they will probably rely on the same techniques to safely store data.

Moon swirls originated during icy comet collisions.

A new space mystery seems to have been solved after scientists have postulated that icy comet collisions led to strange moon swirls, new study finds. The findings of the new research were published in the journal Icarus and researchers hope the discovery will serve as a basis for future investigations.

Just when people were beginning to think that there isn’t much left to say about the Moon and its activity, space experts launch a new hypothesis related to the occurrence of its specific bright swirls. Based on their declarations, it was icy comet collisions that led to the appearance of the strange moon swirls.

The study was conducted by Peter Schultz of the Brown University and Megan Bruck-Syal from the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. The two scientists have subjected all moon images to a close analyses to get detailed data about the mile-long swirls that may be noticed on the surface of the planet.

They have, thus, discovered that the moon swirls might have been caused by powerful collisions with icy comets. These strange features are somewhat different than the popular crater impacts we have seen so far; therefore experts believe these have a different origin.

Thanks to the computer-generated simulations, Schultz and Syal managed to reproduce the trajectory and the impact of comets on the surface of the moon. The strangely bright swirls have formed when the gas halo surrounding the comet rubbed the surface of the moon upon the impact. The gas halo is made out of ice and coma and, therefore, it has the natural ability of changing rock surfaces.

Although the hypothesis has not been fully proved, there are many chances that the sinuous shapes noticeable within the swirls might have originated as a result of the gaseous coma hitting the planet. The thesis also explains the unusual magnetic levels registered in the areas near the moon swirls.

The magnetic field was first noticed in 1970 and has continued to puzzle space experts ever since. Thanks to the recent findings, scientists believe colliding comets melted iron-rich particles on the surface, thus, making them vulnerable to the surrounding magnetic field.

Moreover, the magnetic field of the comet would interfere on the surface’s own magnetic field. The two forces would combine and magnetic anomalies as the ones registered in the 1970s would appear.

The study and its findings will be accurately presented in the journal Icarus.

The LHC will continue experiments after a two-year pause.

Scientists working within the machinery have informed the press that the Large Hadron Collider is back in business again. The system has been shut down for a period of approximately two years as new upgrades have been enacted on the collider.

The Large Hadron Collider has fallen into oblivion in the past years as researchers at the Swiss-French project kept themselves away from the media. Last month, however, the collider began making headlines again as scientists made new experiments.

The Large Hadron Collider has been upgraded to produce more energy and the first results showed that the efforts have, indeed, paid off. During the recent tests, the LHC managed to produce a 13 TeV energy capacity, a lot more than it used to in 2013 when the system hadn’t been upgraded.

Scientists were incredibly satisfied with their recent achievements as the new mass of energy that has been created was labeled as a new world record. Past experiments have only managed to produce 8 TeV energy, so the improvements really work, scientists concluded.

Google’s driverless cars waiting to be tested on Virginia’s highways.

The community has followed in the footsteps of other U.S. states and has put 70 miles of highway to the disposition of the search giant.

Google’s fully autonomous cars get test-driven on Virginia’s highways in the following period, as the company has officially stated in a recent press release. The experiment is now possible thanks to the more permissive driving regulations that Virginia has adopted in relation to the company’s fully autonomous cars.

There aren’t many states that have agreed to take part in the study that Google is currently conducting. Only California, Nevada, Michigan, Florida and Washington, D.C. have given permission to developers to test drive the self-driven prototype on their highways. As of today, 70 more miles have been added to the itineraries that Google’s car can follow.

Virginia has made the announcement official during this week’s edition of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America Conference in Pittsburgh. The decision was adopted as Virginia wants to offer its support to Google’s ambitious plans. Moreover, states representatives believe self-driven cars could turn out extremely effective in the future and they could eventually replace traditional and less safe vehicles.

Even so, the fully autonomous car is now undergoing numerous tests to prove its efficiency. The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute has taken upon itself the responsibility of supervising the car’s on-road behavior.

A recent study shows that environmental activists rely on pester power to convince people to save the planet and the strategy could have numerous benefic consequences in the future. Children are said to be the only ones that truly have the power to inspire adults and to make effective changes in the world, campaigners have concluded.

Pester power is a formal term that was coined to express the emotional sabotage techniques that children normally use to convince their parents to buy this or that toy. Children were, thus, thought to save water and other resources whenever this is possible. Two sea lions make their way through the sand after being released from the Pacific Marine Mammal Center.

Based on the recent reports, the Pacific Marine Mammal Center rescues fourteen chlorine poisoned sea lions, after carrying through difficult relief maneuvers on the Laguna Beach region of the Pacific Coast. The intervention was necessary as the mammals were severely sickened in April during the chlorine contamination of one of the pools at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center.

The present year debuted with many rescuing missions for sea lion experts. Numerous mammals have stranded as a result of the increase water pollution. Events culminated with the recent chlorine contamination of one of the pools within the Pacific Marine Mammal Center causing more than 14 sea lions to seek refuge on the Laguna Beach region.

The stranded mammals had been poisoned; thus, biologists have been carrying out salvation activities ever since in an attempt to restore the mammals’ health conditions. The objective was accomplished on Tuesday afternoon when the 14 victims were safely restored to the cold and fresh water of the Pacific Ocean. The moment was captured by numerous photographers and publicly acclaimed by scientists and local inhabitants, alike.

Keith Matassa of the Pacific Marine Mammal Center was the most relieved to see the sea lions return to the ocean. She told the press that the entire center was hoping for a full recovery of the mammals and were desperately waiting for the closure moment.

The Pacific Marine Mammal Center is worldwide known for the rescuing activities they have been carrying out since its first years of activity. According to their official declarations, the poisoned sea lions had been brought to their facilities in order to be treated of previous injuries. The mammals were just two days ahead of their release, when the pools of the marine center have been sabotaged.

Researchers claim someone has sneaked into the pool and spilled excessive amounts of chlorine into the water. The 17 sea lions suffered corneal ulcerations and had to be kept in special pools for their condition to be restored. Authorities are now investigating the incident to identify the person who is responsible for the sickening of the sea lions.

In spite of the recent problems, researcher at the unit are satisfied that they have succeeded in saving the mammals. They are now working to find new measures to prevent other sea lion stranding in the future.

Microsoft seems to have a knack for purchasing apps aiming to increase people’s productivity, as The Wall Street Journal reported that a new acquisition is in the play.

According to the report, Microsoft is set to spend somewhere between $100 million and $200 million on buying a startup called 6Wunderkinder GmbH. The Berlin-based company owns the famous productivity app Wunderlist, and it has become popular enough to draw Microsoft’s attention.

If the deal goes through, the giant tech firm will have put together the complete package of apps focused on calendars, email, and now to-do lists. Acompli, the email app, was last year’s acquisition, a service enabling users to give a much faster email response via template answers.

The app also featured an innovative system for sorting the emails entering the inbox, and it soon became the Outlook app, as Microsoft quickly re-branded it. Early 2015, the company went on and bought Sunrise, the calendar app which is still operating autonomously.

Wunderlist is among the best-rated apps in App Store, gaining four and a half stars. Basically, it does exactly what a physical to-do list would, but it also allows users to share their achievements with co-workers and friends.

It comes with various extra options, such as the ability to create lists which can be edited by multiple users. For this to work, Wunderlist also doubles up as a team-work service that doesn’t necessarily require a smartphone since it runs on both desktop and mobile.

In 2013, Wunderlist was featured as Apple’s Mac App of the Year for its desktop version. The app is integrated with Slack since last month, which means users can see tasks and notifications in the collaboration tool while at the same time being able to chat in real time.

Startup 6Wunderkinder is fairly young, founded only 4 years ago by six friends. It took only four engineers and two designers from Berlin to launch the desktop version of Wunderlist in November 2010, soon followed by an iOS app in December.

Despite its short presence in the market, the company has made $23.9 million in five rounds, $19 million of which came from Sequoia Capital. Both Evernote and Dropbox are proud additions to their portfolio.

Chief Executive Christian Reber said they accomplished quite a lot in such a short time, managing to reach in various departments. Users come to 6Wunderkinder for three things: for files, they download Dropbox, for notes they have Evernote (outstanding app, both on desktop and mobile) and for tasks – there’s Wunderlist.

Yes, a flying saucer. On Wednesday, NASA will be live broadcasting the launch and flight test of one of its craziest sounding prototypes, a test originally scheduled for Tuesday.

It was postponed because today’s ocean conditions wouldn’t allow the rescue mission to safely recover the craft after the flight. NASA has loaded the Low Density Supersonic Decelerator (LDSD) on a large weather balloon which will act as a launcher.

The technology used to design the LDSD – edge-of-atmosphere and supersonic – carries the agency’s hopes that one day will make missions on Mars possible. If the test works, the flying saucer will prove to be more suitable for future Mars missions because it will enable a safer surface landing for great payloads.

At the same time, the craft’s design will allow astronauts a better access to the rest of the planet because it is able to land said payloads at various altitudes, as high as necessary. A successful flight test will improve the chances of advancing robotic science missions on the Red Planet.

Moreover, complex human expeditions will stand a better chance of becoming reality, as the heavy gear necessary for survival will finally have an appropriate means of transportation.

On Wednesday, the plan is to track the weather balloon carrying the LDSD as high as 120,000 feet (36,576 meters). The ascent will take over two hours; the first 30 minutes after launch, NASA will offer live feed from ground tracking cameras.

After this mark, four cameras located above the test craft will take over the broadcast, with images of considerably lower resolution. Mark Adler, project manager for LDSD at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said that the world will be able to see the same video feed as the scientists, at exactly the same time.

This year’s challenge is to test the new model of supersonic parachute. Its performance will be caught on tape by one of the four cameras, as each of them will show a different perspective of the test.

Even though the resolution is low, Adler hopes this fourth camera will catch the exact moment of the deployment of supersonic parachute. There was another test last year, and the model of the parachute they had did not perform very well.

But with the great number of improvements the mission team has brought to the design also come great hopes of getting it to finally work on this test. If you’re interests in checking how it works, head to NASA TV or on JPL’s Ustream channel.

Don’t be disappointed if you can’t really make out what happens in the low-res imagery transmitted on the spot. NASA promised that high-res video will follow in the next few days with feed collected from the cameras onboard the LDSD.
